The IP address of the iPad should be different from the Mac.

Sounds like there is indeed some form of mismatch. Forgetting and reconnecting wouldn't help, it is a router setting.

Every router is different. You will need to check yours to see if there is a guest network, or to see if it disables device-to-device communication. I don't know the details.

Perhaps chaley could help. He dealt with this a couple times, in the Calibre Companion forums.
