On the other hand, being able to email books and having those books sync across reading devices is a big plus for the Kindle.

You can send books via email to a Kindle and you can also "Send to Kindle" (using a browser plugin) articles, short stories, etc. These "snippets" just show up in your library, like a book. This is one of my favorite features of the Kindles. (I haven't tried Pocket yet on my Kobo.)
