My wife has a N647 model that currently has v1.9 firmware dated March 29, 2011. Does that model run different firmware, and if so, will it get trashed the moment it gets a forced update to 1.9.12?

James, I only have the image file for the N647 model, not the N289 that you have, and I wouldn't recommend flashing the wrong image file to the card. If you want the N647 image file for your wife's Kobo, PM and I'll send it to you, but best best is to not update hers or it will fail as yours did.
