I haven't quite figured out the debricking thing yet, but I can confirm that the problem appears to be completely WIFI. Once I was able to get the wifi OFF, everything works perfectly. Turn it on, it locks up and stays that way. So, at least I can use it again.
I will try deleting some books that were emailed to my kindle and see if that works. If that doesn't, the debricking thing would be next unless there are other suggestions. Need to clear off a USB drive to do that though.
