Your workaround works well. I've used it that way in the past myself. I just don't like losing more of my screen space. The main computer I use is a small netbook. That extra at the bottom of the screen just takes too much away from the book listings for me.
Another workaround is to right-click on a book. That will bring up a listing that shows OD.
