Actually, customization was not a factor at all to me. I've been using Kindles since the K2 and have been very happy with what they can do (although less happy with the implementation of cloud but...). I simply lived with both devices for a week and I found the H2O screen, the Pocket integration and the storage did it for me. That said, if you just want to "pick up and read" and don't mind the minor screen size and tone differences then either device is great.
