author's cut: in uk i think their epub share is same as for paper library books ~6p per loan.
not sure about USA, I think the publishers enforce 1 purchase for every N loans & author gets their usual cut on that purchase.

but its 100% legit and you can use it as a try then buy - support your favourite authors by then buying the books you rate as exceptionally good.... up to you.
it would probably be more efficient to sent the author a donation though & cut out the middle men

you are also help keeping lending libraries alive, which has to be a good thing.
