The "30 minute a day" figure is an arbitrary figure used to demonstrate the overall battery life. The figure itself doesn't mean anything. They could just as easily have used 60 minutes per day, or six hours per day.
I would have thought that was blindingly obvious, but perhaps not.

Originally, Amazon figured the battery life at one hour of reading per day. B&N wanted to show how the Nook's battery life was better than the Kindle, so they advertised the Nook could last for two months without recharging...assuming you only used it 30 minutes per day. Amazon changed their advertising to match and it's been the same ever since.
