FWIW, I really like the Bates books. They're fairly low-key: the MC is a non-glamorous, single mum with a supportive partner, co-workers/boss can be a d*ck at times...she just gets on with things. And the Icelandic settings, social & landscape, add the exotic part (for me, anyway.)
