I chose the Amazon ecosystem because of the selection of books and mostly at the time because of Whispernet. Way back when, Sony made really good readers but had a lousy store and Syncing was a joke. I loved the way Amazon's Whispernet allowed me to read a book on multiple Kindles, and later on multiple platforms, and never lose my place or bookmarks, or notes, etc. By now other companies have probably added syncing features that might be comparable, but several years ago only Amazon provided what I wanted in that regard. And the ease at which Amazon syncs up everything is nice. With the old Sony readers you had to connect each one of them to a computer via a cable then manually sync. WTF, and what a waste of my time. I think they added WiFi syncing later, but I never heard much good about it.
