Not disks.
Apple and Sun would have special firmware put in standard disks that mostly responded with a special handshake. The Apple and Sun computers wouldn't have anything to do wih disks that didn't have the special firmware.
IBM was proprietary with big iron, but made a deliberate decision to go with standard hardware for personal computers. They also had a gold plated microcomputer line that did not take off.
