The Kindle PW1 should also have the cover view menu option. It was released as a backport to the Touch in fw5.3.2, and IIRC had first appeared in the very first PW release on fw5.3.0 or thereabouts.
I remember I was really excited about that (the backport to the Touch), way back month or so after the PW1 was released. It was a whole song-and-a-dance too -- somehow the entire search index got corrupted in the process, which I eventually discovered with the help of Amazon CS.

Well, whatever the case, I am very happy atm. If for some reason I decide to downgrade again I will check for the covers along the way. It didn't show me anything but text when I downgraded to 5.3.4.2 which was my earliest fw and I used my personal Amazon download for the downgrade, in fact all of the fws used were my own with the exception of 5.3.9 which I downloaded here just to see if it had cover view before I went all the way back to 5.4.4.1. I always backup my devices before doing anything and I had downloaded all of those from Amazon as soon as released and upgraded myself. I think that's why I was so shocked about the "wifi off update".
Sorry to hear about your issues with the touch.
