New Guinea was an Australian theatre of war, and it was a known fact at the time that some of the tribes were still headhunters. Overall though we couldn't have did what we did, and survived in the numbers that we survived without the support of the 'fuzzy wuzzy angels' (The native men).
The Japanese were also very wary of the PNG people and called them the 'grey ghosts' because of their abilities to blend in and take very swift warrior actions.
(No, I haven't read the book - but the Kokoda Trail, and other battle grounds of PNG, are etched in the historical mind of every Australian because of the bravery and endurance of all who served.)
