My PocketBook 902 and Touch Lux both have matte finishes on the screen. I suspect the Basic models do, as well. I'm not sure whether the surface is glass or plastic, but neither of my devices has a scratch yet, so it may be glass.
I wonder if you are getting eyestrain from having difficulty focusing on the letters under a matte surface. I don't know how to fix that, but maybe you can try experimenting with your focusing to see if you can get some relief. Is your vision so acute that you can see the slight blurring of the characters caused by the matte finish?
