If it's done as a debit charge specifically, that isn't true. There
are fees. They are
lower than for credit cards, and rightly so (the bank doesn't have to cover up to 30 days of interest free float, and in fact,
gets a couple of days of float for themselves usually), but there are fees.
There are other options for getting money from your checking account to theirs, and I have no idea what the fee structure is on those (and most are not all that readily available to US merchants, but we're talking some of the biggest retailers in the US here), but when money moves from one bank account to another, there are
always fees of some kind. That is how banks operate.
