I like stories with cats and dogs as main characters.

I was surprised it wasn't posted already either!

The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein (original)
and
Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein (adapted for kids)

Another one I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned yet is Lassie Come-Home by Eric Knight. I loved this books when I was younger! I wonder where my copy is? I'd like to read it again.

The Warriors series by Erin Hunter (and its 12 million spin-offs) is a good suggestion. My son collects them and after reading the first one I recommend Watership Down to him, which he also enjoyed. (Or is enjoying. That one is a hardcover, not an ebook, and he hasn't returned it to me yet. I think he is still working through it.)

He is also reading a series called Spirit Animals, a collaboration by several authors, but even though I just asked him a few days ago, I can't remember if they are people with animal traits or animals that are the characters. I *think* it was that animals are the characters. The most recent book just came out a couple of weeks ago.

Back to books I've actually read, the Mrs. Murphy series by "Sneaky Pie" and Rita Mae Brown (cozy mystery series featuring a cat and several animal accomplices.)

There is also The Cat Who... series by Lillian Jackson Braun; I think the cats are really supporting characters, even though it is interpreting their actions that ultimately solves the mysteries in each book.

I'm sure I have more, but that's all that popped into my head just now.
