I don't have an average paperback to hand but I'd guess a paperback book is closer to 16:9 then to 4:3 ?

The ratio on my Kindle Fire 8.9 HDX feels very "bookish" in portrait mode, and with the sideloaded mantano app which adds a fake "unturned right hand page edges" border, it's quite convincing.

Contrast that with the Kobo Aura HD which is a comfortable read but is much "squarer" than a real book

Good point about sunlight though - e-ink is a must have for outdoor reading.
