Australian states use three different railway gauges. Not so many years ago the trains from Sydney (New South Wales) to Melbourne (Victoria) changed their wheels at the border.
Why - well in the case of NSW and Victoria it was a means of restricting trade.
So the Silicone Valley walled gardens of the 21st century are merely copying the policies of 19th century Trade Protectionist colonial governors - i.e. 21st century corporate imperialism.
