The epub reader is generally slower than the kepub reader, it is noticeable with opening the book and page turning, although it can depend on the structure of the individual book to some extent. Since the Kindle is reading books in its native format, a fair comparison would be with a Kobo reading a book in its native kepub format.
However I don't think the epub speed is a problem for reading, I find for turning pages with the epub reader it is just a matter of getting used to the timing and releasing my finger from the swipe a fraction earlier than with the kepub reader. Opening an epub book is only slow the first time, once the epub is in memory it opens almost as fast as a kepub.
