There's also a big difference between what is supported in KF8-capable devices and what kindlegen et al can translate into a usable form for pre-KF8 readers. The KF8 readers just run WebKit with some glue on top, and WebKit has always supported a much broader range of selectors than Amazon officially supports.

However, not all of those pseudoclasses are supported by the kindlegen's relatively limited CSS to HTML translation engine, so if you use any pseudoclasses that aren't on the supported list for any styles that should be applied to MOBI content, you're in for a world of hurt.
