The buttons are pressure sensitive so they should work covered or not. They are basically covered by glass now, so a bit of sticky paper shouldn't hinder their function. If it were me, I would not want a cut out in the skin as it is not needed. Instead I would want a printed button on the skin so I could find them.
But I don't use skins.
