I'm pretty sure if you add the lines for your side-loaded font in your Kobo eReader.conf file that it will work to increase the thickness. Here's a scan of one of my favorite side-loaded fonts, Lexia DaMa, on the old firmware where it didn't make a difference adding the line, and on 3.11.0 where it is quite a bit thicker with the lines added.
These are the 2 lines I added for the Lexia DaMa font. I'm not sure the sharpness setting makes any difference anymore (but Kobo didn't remove it with the new firmware), and I also have GeoffR's patch installed, but again, not sure if that's required for this to work.

I use that hack on my Glo and text is still perfect as before, I don't see any cutoffs at either end of the page. Maybe it depends on the font used? Or possibly a margin setting, I have mine set to 2 for left and right margins. But I've tried several different fonts last night, both system and side-loaded fonts, and didn't see it happen. On the Glo, we need 2 lines entered, maybe adding that 2nd line will help with other readers after this patch?
