Still, my two cents: It might be something with the light layer. Glue not evenly distributed across the layer, bending the light in funky rainbow colored ways.
Or some other residue still sticking on it, blocking just enough light to cause discolorations.
Or perhaps the thickness of the layer itself varies a bit here and there, guiding the light less optimal over some spots.

Then again, since there are ever so small color temperature differences in LEDS, some of them might be fighting with each other... anyway, nothing that can be fixed with a FW update I'm afraid.

With such a hefty pricetag you're absolutely right to demand an uniform lit display, though! I would be disappointed too.

Regarding those who are considering an H2O: mine is not "paperwhite" at all (in a dimly lit room!), more of a creamy yellow. It has some mild shadows on the bottom but absolutely nothing like the pics I've seen here - it is a very, very good display. Not perfect, but the closest thing to perfect I've seen so far...
