My sideloaded ePub and KePub both crash on highlighting, But the direct download from Kobo does not.

My extra CSS for conversion is:

@page { margin: 5pt;}
body { orphans: 1; widows: 1 }

I hope some of this helps. I will try books from the MR library shortly.
As you are sideloading from calibre, could you run calibre in debug mode, send a book and post the log? There is something poking at the back of my brain and it says to look at the log.
