Yes, e-readers would be the one class of device that Amazon purposely imposes exclusivity on.

But this is a standard practice: I can't get Nook books or Kobo books on my Kindle either, but I can get them on my tablet and phone using the apps. They all do the same thing.

It seems that none of them want to play with each other. It isn't ideal, but it is reality for now. If you want Kobo books on an e-ink e-reader... afraid you pretty much just have to get a Kobo! (Ignoring the one or two e-ink Android tablets, of course)
