Actually from what I have heard the neck isn't really stretched as much as you think with those rings. Every now and then they remove them in order to add more rings (up to a point) and suffer no ill effects. It's more that the shoulders are pushed downward than the neck is stretched (remember neck bones are pretty solid) and it just looks like the neck is stretched by it.
