Well, I could not resist and ordered the new Basic from Amazon. It arrived just now. And yes, the screen is a tiny bit grayer than my old Kindle Basic (which has an exceptional screen, of course), and the text is not quite as dark and bold. It's still pretty good and I have no problem with reading on it. Even so, I'm a bit disappointed.
Otherwise, it works well and is fast. But I think I'll be using my non-touch basic for quite a while yet.
