There's Kobo Start Menu, advboot, fmon and likely more.
My personal preference is advboot which runs at startup before much of the Kobo software loads -- no need to stop nickel when it never gets to start though the disadvantage is that you need to restart to switch between koreader and Kobo's renderers. Basically copy the koreader files into place, run the KoboRoot.tgz from this message:
Advboot for firmware 3.8.0, let your Kobo restart and enjoy.
