It also sounds like you need to charge it overnight. All li batteries have some "self-discharge" and if left too long could be brought from low to too low.
It should recover with an overnight charging. (It will automatically stop drawing current when the battery is charged.)

A cracked substrata usually shows by lines appearing on the display. Other failures of the display are very rare. It won't burnout or anything like that.

How are you launching KOreader by the way?
