I didn't realize that e-ink screens need active changing. I left my Kobo at home on standby during a trip, so now I'm worried maybe the screen is toast. I remember the light by the power button flashing when I tried the pinhole reset.
I'll try the factory reset and get back with results, but not feeling very optimistic right now

It also sounds like you need to charge it overnight. All li batteries have some "self-discharge" and if left too long could be brought from low to too low.
It should recover with an overnight charging. (It will automatically stop drawing current when the battery is charged.)
A cracked substrata usually shows by lines appearing on the display. Other failures of the display are very rare. It won't burnout or anything like that.
How are you launching KOreader by the way?
Luck;
