It worked. I reset the Kindle and pressed home, and it brought me to the menu screen where it allowed me to select "firmware reset." Hopefully this will fix my problem. Thanks for the help.

Update: I think it fixed the problem. The Kindle was restored to factory settings, and seems to work perfectly.
