Reading outside isn't necessarily reading in direct sunlight. I prefer to read in the half-shade, which makes reading a LCD screen difficult (without increasing brightness to full and thus decreasing battery life dramatically), but an e-ink screen is perfect in those situations.
Yes, I've spent many hours the last two years down by the river reading in the shade of a tree. An eink screen is perfect for that. I find that a tablet doesn't work as well in that situation.
