Is there a way I can improve the display ?
You can use OpenOffice or LibreOffice, convert your RTF to ODT and edit it with the PerfectEpub extension (or its recent fork Pepito Cleaner). These extensions may help you to reformat your text properly. After that you can export your work to ePub with the Writer2epub extension. You can then load it with calibre and eventually convert it to AZW3.

As all these OpenOffice/LibreOffice extensions are from a group of italian programmers, you may need google translate.
