Personally, I prefer Aura HD over Aura H2O.
I'm not too fond of the design of Aura HD, but I like Aura H2O even less.
Aura HD has a "fold" on the back which makes it convenient enough to hold, although it's rather bulky. That fold is gone on Aura H2O and I find it really inconvenient to hold. Bulky, not much grip and no "fold" to grasp.
I'd only buy Aura H2O, if the waterproof feature is important to you. Display-wise I don't see much of a difference.
In direct comparison, Aura H2O seems brighter than Paperwhite 2. Even Aura HD seems slightly brighter than Paperwhite 2. But that's a vague comparison, you simply can crank up the light a bit on any of those readers...

Hm... When I put my H2O en my HD next to each other I can see a big difference in terms of contrast, with or without the frontlight. At least to my eyes there is a big improvement. In fact, I can read the H2O in my dimly lit living room without the frontlight, which I could not do with my HD!
The texture of the back is improved too, much more like the paperwhites. Textured. Not so smooth as the HD. The HD is much more prone to accidental slips, which happened to mine yesterday - now I've got an HD with a horizontal line not showing text... frustratingly-near-to-useless in other words.
If you got the cash to spend you should go for it, Jimmy - 6.8 to 6 is actually a pretty big difference in screen estate. I could never go back to a 6 inch reader. :-)
