Heck yeah! Creating a Debian chroot is easy, but I haven't yet figured out how to make updating the framebuffer actually draw to the screen yet. Or does fbdev take care of it automatically? I haven't gotten around to trying X yet.
I spot Netsurf on your screenshot, which I think would work great for on-device browsing. Have you tried if e.g. Liferea provides a usable interface as well? An RSS reader is sorely missing on the default software.
I was thinking in the direction of compiling Synergy on the device itself to use my regular mouse and keyboard and then running applications on my desktop transported through ssh -C. A bit roundabout perhaps, but I'd want to at least give it a try before discounting it because it might allow the use of heavy software like LO Writer. (Although I prefer Markdown and LaTeX regardless, so not the biggest problem if latency were too high.)
