I think their apparent developing strategy is the correct one for them: e-reading devices for hardcore readers, and reading apps for every platform that makes sense for them to be on.

This has to be the correct way for them to attack this problem. Amazon only owns about 3% of the tablet market, it is their app on other platforms that makes up a huge portion of their ebook purchases, I have to think. (And their dedicated readers, obviously)
