Seriously, though, what I was trying to say was that, since I read the Odyssey (in the English translation!), I enjoyed it so much that I thought it was about time that I learned latin to be able to have a go at reading (other) classics in the original.

Good for you! Latin is a wonderful language, and for poetry especially,
has to be read in the original to fully appreciate it. Stick with it - it can feel like you're going backwards at times, but the end results are well worthwhile. If you get stuck and need any help, don't hesitate to ask.
