The problem here is - there are millions of people who use a Reader. Even if only 1% of those who use their Kindle without a reading cover broke their Reader due to a lack of it they are still a "good number of people".
But it doesn't really make the use of a cover a "must have".
So "I have read a lot of people broke their unprotected readers" isn't really a good indicator for the need of a protection.
If one feels more comfortable with using a cover by all means, go for it, but as seanwhat said, calling people foolish for not using one is ridiculous.
