Nowhere in my instructions did I say compile anything.

The compiled binaries provided by Kovid will be used. But if you set the environment variable on the development page, calibre will load the runtime python code from the source. Your distro calibre will have the source code installed and a python27 site-package placing it in your pythonpath, while relying on distro dependencies, etc. so you could download the driver there too... but ideally we use Kovid's binaries since those are supported.
But yeah, totally unnecessary AS YET if you don't have the H2O, although it may come in useful if Kobo changes the workings.
