I saw the comment on the Best Buy promotion last night (thanks connie2000!), and it was a no-brainer trading-in my 1st Gen Fire in for the $50 credit this morning.

When doing the trade-in the register said the trade in value was $3, but when purchasing the newer Fire, it (the cash register) added another $47.

I had the chance to read the fine print at the register (when the cashier was trying to figure out how to put in the difference), and you can trade in up to 2 working tablets (no broken screens), but they will not take any B&N Nooks or e-ink readers.
