I believe you can just open a new column in any Spreadsheet:

Insert a Substring(cell,4) formula referencing the imported ones field and then copy 'down' to all remaining cells (most adjust the cell references)

I don't know how to do it in OO, but Quattro Pro had a command to change formula cell contents to the calculated value
