So the replacement Kindle basic arrived... and it has a better screen. The background is slightly whiter, and the font is significantly blacker. It also has blacker font than the PW2 and looks about the same as the k4black.
So yeah it's just the usual deal with variation in screens. I'll be sending the old one back to amazon.
