current PW *and* OS X mavericks question

By current PW I'm referring to the most recent, 4GB of storage version of Amazon's Paperwhite (was unsure of its' pseudonym, PW2 or PW3).

Having read the handwriting on the wall I'm considering jumping ship from Barnes & Noble and heading over to the azw/mobi camp. This decision is due also in part to the fact that for some time I have been unable to directly connect my Nook HD or Simple Touch to my Macbook Pro and have it recognized. I tried the Android file transfer app but it too has proved dysfunctional and I'm not paying $35 to Wondershare for this functionality.

While I also have a Windows 7 machine where I am able to side load as well as delete epub files (both with and without Calibre) I'd much prefer to perform these same tasks using the Mac, partnered with Calibre.

Without having to jump through a bunch of programming, use of code or third-party software (besides Calibre, of course), is it conceivable to expect that all that's needed for this endeavor is merely the coupling of a Paperwhite to the Mac via USB?
