Well I think I've found out why this book won't open on my sister's HD. After getting my H2O I tried the same book and it opened perfectly. After a lot of head scratching I remembered that I always use straight sideloaded epubs while my sister uses the Kobo Extended plugin to convert her sideloaded epubs to kepubs. My conclusion was that there is something in the book that the kepub renderer doesn't like. This was proven to be the case as when I disabled the plugin and reloaded the book, her HD opens it fine. What the exact problem is with the book I still don't know, but at least my sister can now read it.

Thank you to everyone who offered suggestions.
