Which Fires do they have? If they have the new 2014 versions go to Settings - Device Options - Backup & Restore - Backup Now. When they get the new device go to the same setting and click Restore. Though if memory serves the User Guide says it is supposed to ask the user if they want to restore from a backup or start new when it is first registered.
