If you boot directly into desktop mode, it is little different from Windows 7, especially if you get something like "Start 8" to add a Start menu. I was quite resilient to Windows 8, but since the new laptop I bought came with it, I gave it a whirl. 8.0 was awful, but 8.1 is surprisingly usable.
The only concern I have with it on a Chromebook-like system is that it's not the most resource-friendly, but I have also not run it on anything low-powered, so I have no actual experience to base this concern on.
