I've had a couple of issues with books put on my Kobo's via the desktop app. Deleting them on the device and syncing over WiFi has always fixed them.
It might also be worthwhile removing the books from the PC. Removing the complete Kobo directory and letting the desktop app setup a new database and download the books has also fixed loading problems.

Thank you for the suggestions! I didn't actually look at how much space was available. Not sure how to do that, but it's probably pretty straightforward. I did, however, delete about 25 books off of it and it still told me there wasn't enough space. I will plug it in again and try to see exactly how much space it says is left.
Hmmm, I only got WiFi a few months back, but have never synced my Kobo that way, so I really don't know how to do that. I did try to connect with it once to see what would happen, but I don't know that anything did happen. Or, I just didn't know how to make anything happen with it!
Removing the books and the complete Kobo directory from my PC? You mean, remove the entire Kobo desktop software and reinstall? That was what I was thinking might be my next move. But I'll attempt your other suggestions first.
Thanks again for replying, and my apologies for popping back in here so late! I only got my email notification that there was a reply today!
