There is more light shining on the new basic than there is the old basic, but it still can not match the old basic's screen.
The camera tries to compensate with the flash being off with the exposure. It is easy to make both ereaders look like they have paperwhite screens. Take no photo even this one as evidence one way or the other. You have to see for yourself. All of these photos are effectively lies.
But I'm telling the screen is inferior. Nathan at the-digital-reader noted the same thing.

I even compared it to a 2012 Paperwhite and found the screen on the new model coming up short. That shouldn't be possible, but it's true.
