After removing the device, that is where the problem started.
Why did you log out of your account? That will remove all your books and information from the Aura HD. Not quite a factory reset but close.

I've also tried doing the resets while plugging the device into an outlet or into the computer. If the light near the power button is off, does that mean the device is off? When you turn the device on, does the light stay on as well?
The LED does not stay on. It does flash during some steps of the boot process but normally it is off. The display does not blank out when you turn off an eInk device or it crashes. Whatever image is on it remains during a power outage.

You might want to try a hardware factory reset.
  1. Charge your Aura HD for a couple of hours
  2. Slide the power switch right and hold it for 20 seconds to ensure your Aura HD is off. Release the power switch after 20 seconds.
  3. Press and hold the light button.
  4. Slide the power switch right and release it.
  5. Wait for the LED to start flashing rapidly (stobing/discoing) and then release the light button.
  6. Hopefully, your Aura HD will now reset to factory and you will be able to continue with the setup.

Let me know if the process above does not work. Good luck!
