For what it's worth, scripts or the software on the current device wouldn't have anything to do with it, since the actual firmware resides on some EPROM outside the system. Pretty much as there aren't any files containing the BIOS on an actual computer, either.

I think it's a rather sure bet that such a facility has been included in the device for Kobo to handle fatal, warranty covered software breakages on returned devices efficiently. We just have to find it.
