Things get ranked depending on how interested I am, and if something is not interesting enough to ever make it to the top or receive special attention, then there is no actual harm in having it float around back there.

I will never get to the end of my TBR, and I don't wish to -- that would mean I ran out of books to read.
No, I definitely do not consider my list as goalpost. My tbr list is rather a very short list of books I already started reading, and want to finish. I probably have something similiar to what Alan got - book ADHD - if something appears to promise more interesting, I would drop the current book and get suckered in the next. I found it to be hard to get back into the abandoned book, especially if it is still in the boring "let's explain the world rules part." I will never run out of things to read - in a pinch I always have the next Dresden book for rereading, also would not mind to squeeze in Harry Potter reread sometime.

So my tbr list is really short in order to be able to put another book in in the not so far away future. I don't want to constantly reevaluate a priority of the books to read.
